The James Monroe Law Office was the law firm of former US President James Monroe and is located in the Fredericksburg Historic District in Fredericksburg , Virginia . As a structure of national importance, it has the status of a National Historic Landmark .

Building description

Until 1948, the James Monroe Law Office saw little structural changes. Until then it consisted of a long, one and a half story red brick building with narrow windows, green shutters , two simple entrances and three chimneys. The original building has three dormer windows that sit on a gable roof . In 1948 a one-and-a-half-story house with a square base was added vertically to one longitudinal end, so that the James Monroe Law Office has had an L-shape ever since. Under the annex is a large cellar that houses a small library on Monroe and his era.

history

The James Monroe Law Office was built in 1758. From 1786 to 1789, James Monroe ran a law firm here. During this time he was a member of the House of Commons of the Virginia General Assembly and in June 1788 a delegate to the Virginia Ratification Assembly . Shortly after the loss to James Madison in the elections for the House of Representatives in the 1st United States Congress , Monroe moved with his family to Albemarle County in April 1789 , where he lived in the immediate vicinity of his friend Thomas Jefferson .

A descendant of Monroe, Laurence Governor Hoes, acquired the James Monroe Law Office and set up a museum there. The building has been restored and furnished with furniture that comes from the later phase of Monroe's life. These include Louis-Seize- style furniture that Monroe acquired as ambassador to France during the 1790s. In July 1948, Hoes and his wife transferred the property to the James Monroe Foundation .

On November 13, 1966, the James Monroe Law Office received the status of a National Historic Landmark and was entered as a monument on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). On September 22, 1971, the building was also included in the NRHP as a Contributing Property of the Historic District of Fredericksburg.

Today the James Monroe Museum is operated by the University of Mary Washington .
