James Sullivan (athlete)
James Sullivan ( James Patrick Sullivan ; born February 28, 1885 , † March 1964 in New York City ) was an American middle-distance runner .
In 1905 he ran a mile in 4: 22.0 minutes, the fastest time ever for an American-born athlete.
At the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , he was fifth over 1500 m and eliminated over 800 m in the preliminary run.
In 1907 he became US champion in the mile run . The following year he was seventh or eighth in the 1500 m Olympic Games in London .
James Sullivan started for the Irish American Athletic Club.
