James Wedderburn (* around 1495 in Dundee , † 1553 in France ) was a Scottish poet .

Life

Wedderburn studied at St Andrews University and toured France . In 1539 a tragedy and a comedy of his were staged in Dundee , which caused scandals because of their polemics against the Catholic Church. Wedderburn fled to France, where he died. In 1540 his brother John (around 1500–1556) also resigned; he was a priest and spent two years in Wittenberg . Brother Robert (around 1510–1557) was also a priest; he too had to flee on suspicion of heresy , but came back after 1546 and became vicar of Dundee.

The three brothers co-wrote The Book of Godly and Spirituall Songs , also known as the Dundee Psalms : a collection of satirical ballads and religious adaptations of folk songs. The first edition known today dates from 1567, but the poems are likely to have been written much earlier.
