Jan Švéda (born November 5, 1931 in Břeclav ; † December 14, 2007 ) was a Czechoslovak rower who won an Olympic medal in 1960.

Athletic career

At the European Championships in 1956 in Bled, the eighth from Czechoslovakia won in the line-up of Josef Věntus , Eduard Antoch , Ctibor Reiskup , Jan Švéda, Josef Švec , Zdeněk Žára , Jan Jindra , Stanislav Lusk and helmsman Miroslav Koranda ahead of the French and Hungarians. In the last week of November 1956, the Olympic rowing regatta took place in Melbourne . The European champions from Czechoslovakia won their preliminary run, but were eliminated in the semifinals as third behind Canada and Sweden, as only the first two boats from each of the two semifinals reached the final.

The following year at the European Championships in Duisburg , Václav Jindra was in the boat instead of Eduard Antoch, which took third place behind the boats from Italy and the Soviet Union. After the Czechoslovak eighth at the 1958 European Championships was unable to row a medal, the crew won the silver medal behind the Germany eighth at the 1959 European Championships in Mâcon . In 1959, the crew of the Czechoslovak eighth consisted of Pavel Hofman , Václav Jindra, Bohumil Janoušek , Jan Švéda, Josef Švec, Luděk Pojezný , Jan Jindra, Stanislav Lusk and helmsman Miroslav Koníček .

A year later, six rowers from the boat from 1959 were still among the eight that competed at the 1960 Olympic Games on Lake Albano. Bohumil Janoušek, Jan Švéda, Jiří Lundák , Václav Pavkovič , Jan Jindra, Luděk Pojezný, the returnees Josef Věntus, Stanislav Lusk and Miroslav Koníček won their preliminary run and thus entered the finals just like the other two preliminary winners, Germany and Canada. In the final, the Germans won with over four seconds ahead of the Canadians, three seconds behind the eighth from Czechoslovakia won the bronze medal with 1.7 seconds ahead of the French.
