Jan Barszczewski ( Belarusian Ян Баршчэўскі Jan Barschtscheuski ; * 1790 or 1794 in the village of Murahi , Vitebsk Governorate , Russian Empire ; † March 11, 1851 in Tschudniw , Volhynia Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Belarusian and Polish poet and writer.

Life

January Barszczewski came one the son Uniate priest in Murahi ( Мурагі ) in Belarus today Rajon Rassony , to the world. He studied at the Jesuit Academy in Polatsk . After graduating from school, he briefly worked as a tutor in his home region and then worked as a teacher and writer in Saint Petersburg in the 1820s and 1830s . He wrote his poems and stories mainly in Polish, but also in Belarusian. In Petersburg he met the Polish national poet Adam Mickiewicz and in 1839 the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko , who was interested in Belarusian songs and works by Belarusian writers. Barszczewski's best-known work is the work Szlachcic Zawalnia or Belarus in Fantastic Tales, published in Polish from 1844–1846 . He traveled a lot through Western Europe and in 1847 settled on an estate near Zhytomyr . He died in 1851 after a long illness and was buried in the Tschudniw cemetery.
