biography

After further training in ear, nose and throat medicine , he worked as an ENT doctor and also completed a postgraduate course in Egyptology .

In 1966 he was one of the co-founders of the social liberal party Democrats 66 (D66), of which he was party chairman (Partijvoorzitter) as the successor to Hans van Lookeren Campagne between 1968 and 1971.

In 1972 he was elected as a candidate for the D66 for a member of the Second Chamber of States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal). Initially he was the spokesman for his group for public health and agriculture, later for finance and education. In 1977 he suffered an electoral defeat and resigned as a member of parliament.

Disappointed with the party's course, he left the D66 at the end of the 1970s and later became a member of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA), but without taking on a role in it.
