Jan Blahoslav Kozák (born August 4, 1888 in Čáslav , † January 9, 1974 in Prague ) was a Czech philosopher, politician and member of parliament. He was particularly concerned with the history of philosophy, ethics and religion; he was a professor of philosophy at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague.

Life

Kozák was born into a family of well-known representatives of Protestantism in Bohemia, including his father František Kozák , a Protestant pastor, and his uncle Ferdinand Císař . After graduating from high school in Čáslav, he studied theology, philosophy and philology at the universities of Bonn, Edinburgh, Vienna and Halle, graduating in 1915 with a doctorate in Prague. He initially worked as a professor of German and English at the Business Academy in Kolín , and later (1920–1926) in Prague. In 1921 he completed his habilitation in logic, noetics and the history of philosophy at Charles University in Prague . There he was appointed associate professor in 1927 and full professor in 1933. In 1934 he founded the "Filozofický kroužek" (philosophical circle), which dealt in particular with phenomenological research in the spirit of Edmund Husserl . He was also active in the Československá strana národně socialistická , 1935-1939 he was a member of parliament. He took part in the meetings of the group Pátečníci (The Friday Round), where he met Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Edvard Beneš, among others .

In 1939 Kozák emigrated to the United States, where he lectured at Oberlin College in Ohio . He met Franklin D. Roosevelt personally , was also involved in founding the United States Office of War Information , and had ties to the US diplomatic service.

After 1945 Kozák returned to Czechoslovakia and became dean of the Philosophical Faculty. After reading a declaration of the National Front at the university under pressure , he was able to hold the position until 1958, although he was not allowed to publish his own work.

Works

Kozák's most important works include Essay o vědě a víře (Essay on Science and Faith, 1924), Ježíš ve víře a skepsi (Jesus in Faith and Skepticism, 1929), Noetika (Noetik, 1946) and Principy ontologie a jejich důsledky ( Principles of ontology and their consequences, manuscript 1971). Kozák translated from English, French and Italian.
