Jan Brügelmann (born July 12, 1921 in Cologne ; † June 23, 2012 there ) was a German entrepreneur and sports patron as well as a Cologne local politician and carnivalist.

Brügelmann was married to Jennifer, who was born in England, since 1953 and has two sons. Mayor a. D. Jan Brügelmann died on June 23, 2012 at the age of 90 shortly before his 91st birthday in his home in the south of Cologne. He was buried in his parents' grave in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hallway 60).

Entrepreneur

Brügelmann came from a Protestant Bergisch entrepreneurial family who moved to Cologne at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1937 he joined the family business as the great-great-grandson of the company founder. He was now in the fifth generation of the family business, which had existed since 1820, and which he was most recently managing partner with Helmut Brügelmann .

In the 1970s he gave up the traditional location of the company " FW Brügelmann & Sons " on the north side of the Alter Markt in Cologne's old town after Deutz . There it was originally called a “factory for working clothes, linen and aprons. Mechanische Strumpfstrickere "company operating under the name" established a new production site as early as 1914/15, which still exists today as a clothing wholesaler at Brügelmannstrasse 16/18, D-50679 Cologne. According to the textile trade magazine WRP , the company has 30 employees and recorded (2008) an annual turnover of 6.5 million euros.

Politician

Brügelmann was initially a member of Gustav Heinemann's All-German People's Party , for which he ran unsuccessfully in the 1953 federal election. In contrast to the majority of the party, he did not join the SPD after its failure , but initially remained independent. At the same time as he joined the FDP in 1969, Brügelmann, as a knowledgeable citizen, became a member of various committees of the Cologne city council. From 1979 to 1984, as a member of his party’s parliamentary group, he was mayor of the city of Cologne and thus one of the mayor’s representatives. Subsequently, he held the function of deputy district chairman of the Liberals until 1993.

Promoter of sport, customs and culture

Brügelmann was one of the co-founders of the Cologne Carnival Museum . From 1961 to 1993 he was chairman of the Association of Friends and Supporters of Cologne Customs. even longer, namely 44 years, he was chairman of the “Great Senate” of the carnival, honorary member of Spillmannsgasser Junge e. V., founded in 1955. Until recently he was chairman of the Association of Friends of the Cologne City Museum e. V. He was chairman of the "House of the Forest" association and a member of the Central Cathedral Association .

He was also involved as a member of the leadership of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany .

In addition, Brügelmann was an activist and promoter of sport. He was captain of the German national golf team, then from 1982 to 1994 president of the German Golf Association (DGV) and later also of the European Golf Association. Since 1994 he has been honorary president of the DGV. He was a sponsor and promoter of the German golf champion Bernhard Langer .

Honors

For his services, Jan Brügelmann was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1976 and the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1993 . In 1996, he was entered in the City of Cologne's Golden Book as another special award . On the occasion of his 90th birthday on July 12, 2011, a celebratory “councilor's dinner” took place.
