Jan Christian Ehler (born August 17, 1963 in Munich ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1984 at the Staatliche Landschulheim Marquartstein , Ehler studied journalism , political science and economics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) and the American University in Washington, DC from 1990 to 1991 Assistant to the management of ddp / ADN. After training at the German School of Journalism in Munich in 1993 his doctorate in the Dr. rer. pole. at the LMU Munich with the thesis "US trade policy in the Reagan years - the reactive pattern of interaction between President and Congress" .

From 1992 to 1997 Ehler worked for the Aigner group of companies, most recently as managing director. From 1998 to 2000 he was managing director of the project company Bahnerprobungs- und Technologiezentrum Berlin / Brandenburg GmbH. From 2000 to 2010 he was managing director of the co: bios technology center (formerly Biotech GmbH - BioTechnologieZentrum Hennigsdorf ). In 2006 he was the initiator and founding member of the German European Security Association , of which he was chairman until mid-2013.

Christian Ehler is married and has three children.

Political party

Since December 2001 he has been a member of the CDU district board of Oberhavel and since May 2003 of the CDU state board of Brandenburg. From November 2000 to October 2010 Ehler was state chairman of the Mittelstands- und Wirtschaftsvereinigung (MIT) of the CDU Brandenburg. From October 2003 to November 2007, he was also vice federal chairman of MIT. As state treasurer of the CDU Brandenburg, he is a member of the presidium of the state board.

From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Brandenburg state parliament . Here he was the economic and technology policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group .

Ehler has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 and was a member of the Executive Committee of the EPP Group from 2007 to 2012 . From 2003 to 2007 he was a board member of the SME Union Brussels. He was one of the deputy chairmen of the CDU / CSU group in the European Parliament (from 2006 to 2012).

Since the European elections in 2014 ( 8th legislative period ), Ehler has been 1st Vice-Chairman of the SEDE Committee (Sub-Committee for Security and Defense). He is also a full member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and an alternate member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET). Ehler is also a coordinator in the ITRE. He is also chairman of the delegation for relations with the United States and deputy in the delegation for relations with the Korean Peninsula. Ehler also initiated the "Creative Industries in Europe" intergroup.

After he returned to the European Parliament in the 2019 European elections, Christian Ehler remained both a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the coordinator of the EPP Group in this committee. He is also a member of the Delegation for relations with the United States, an alternate member of the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) and the Delegation for relations with Israel and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.
