Jan Daniel Beynon (* 1830 in Batavia , Dutch East Indies ; † July 29, 1877 ibid) was a Dutch portrait and landscape painter .

Life

His ancestors were in the service of the Dutch East India Company VOC (Dutch: Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie ). His father was a co-owner of the Beynon Brothers company. Thanks to his financial support, Jan Daniel was able to afford an artistic education in the Netherlands.

He began his painting studies in 1848 in Amsterdam at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Cornelis Kruseman and Nicolaas Pieneman .

Jan Daniel Beynon showed his works at the art exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague in 1852 and 1853.

In 1855 Beynon returned to his hometown of Batavia, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He founded his studio in Molenvliet (Jalan Gajah Mada). At that time, Beynon and Raden Saleh were the only trained painters on Java .

Beynon also kept in touch with the Dutch artistic community, as evidenced by two of his paintings at the Amsterdam exhibition of 1868.

Despite his short life - he died at the age of 47 - Beynon has created a large collection of paintings, especially landscapes and scenes from everyday life in Java, as well as portraits, most of which were created in the last ten years of his life.
