Jan Engberg

Jan Engberg (* 1962 ) is a Danish linguist . He teaches at the University of Aarhus belonging Aarhus School of Business and Social Science Department of Business Communication in the fields of translation , cognitive linguistics and communication . As a specialist translator and editor , his research focuses on the relationship between language and meaning in legal language .

biography

As a student at the Aarhus School of Business, Engberg received an MA in German Studies in 1990 and a Ph.D. in linguistics. Engberg has worked as a visiting professor and researcher at many European universities, including the University of Hamburg , the University of Leipzig , the University of Graz and the Brooklyn Law School in New York . In the 1990s, Engberg was a member of the advisory board of the Society for Applied Linguistics e. V. (GAL). He is a member of the editorial board of FACHSPRACHE - International Journal of Specialized Communication, which appears twice a year with articles in English, German, French and Spanish. He is also co-editor of Hermes and LSP Journal.

research

The research focus of Engberg's lies in research on text types and genres in the scientific field. This includes both cognitive aspects of discourse in various areas of knowledge and the relationship between specialist knowledge and text formulation as well as basic research in technical language communication . His research is particularly focused on communication and translation in the field of legal language . There are also other scientific areas such as communication in the research field of climate change . Engberg is also a leader in research into multimodality and the dissemination of academic knowledge.

Engberg is co-initiator of the network RELINE - Legal Linguistics Network at the University of Copenhagen , which focuses on the interaction between law and language and strives to network all areas involved.

Current research project: “Multilingualism and academic writing skills . Developments of measures to promote and empirically test academic literacy ”under the direction of Carmen Heine ( Aarhus ) and Dagmar Knorr ( Hamburg ).
