Life

Fastenau was born as the son of the banker Anton BDC Fastenau. In the north he attended high school. After his parents moved to Blankenburg , Fastenau passed his Abitur there. He studied art history at the universities of Munich, Berlin and Tübingen. From 1910 to 1914 Fastenau worked as a private lecturer in Munich and Berlin. In 1914 he switched to the civil service as assistant to the provincial curator of Pomerania. From 1920 to 1922 Fastenau worked on the historical archives of the Provincial Curator for Stylistics at the State Drawing Academy in Hanau. For health reasons he gave up this job in 1927. From 1928 to 1933 he was the curator of the collections of the Society for Fine Art and Patriotic Antiquities in Emden and thus full-time director of today's East Frisian State Museum .

In the years to come, Fastenau's self-imposed task consisted of a complete recording of the collection and representation of art in East Frisia. For this purpose he undertook extensive trips to all cities and communities in East Friesland. In 1933 Fastenau left the service and settled in Marburg. There he completed his inventory of architectural and art monuments in East Frisia. The work was never published and is now owned by the Aurich Landscape Library .
