Jan Gillisz Valckenier

Jan Gillisz Valckenier (* 1522 in Kampen ; † 1592 in Amsterdam ) was a merchant and Dutch envoy to Denmark and Holstein.

biography

His father was Jelis ( Gillis ) Valckenier, who carried out the profession of Falckner for the Duke of Geldern . Jan Gillisz first lived in Norway, settled in Amsterdam as a merchant in 1557 and thus became the ancestral lord of the Amsterdam Valckeniers . He was a commercial agent of the King of Denmark and politically active as the Dutch envoy to the courts of Denmark and Holstein. Valckenier married Maria Tengnagel, with whom he had nine children. The eldest son Gillis Jansz Valckenier (1550-1613) was councilor of the Admiralty of Amsterdam and captain of the civil guard . He was married to Clara Pauw, sister of the regent Reinier Pauw , and had 16 children, including the Amsterdam Mayor Wouter Valckenier .
