biography

He was born the son of Cornelis Jansz Valckenier (1550-1613) and Claertgen Pauw , a sister of the regent Reinier Pauw . The family of the Valckenier came from NN Geelrok, later called Valckenier after his profession as a falconer , the great falconer and chief hunter of the Duke of Geldern (hence the name Valckenier ). That ancestral lord of the Valckeniers was a great-great-grandfather of Wouter Valckenier.

As Schepen, Wouter Valckenier was a member of the Amsterdam city government in 1634, 1635, 1639, 1640 and 1642. In 1644, 1647, 1648 and 1650 he had been the ruling mayor of his hometown; his last appointment fell in the year of his death, so that he was only able to carry out his office for a short time. One of his sons was the important politician and regent Gillis Valckenier , another his half-brother Sybrant Valckenier , one of the cornerstones of the new town house op de Dam .
