Isaac Commelin (born October 19, 1598 in Amsterdam , † January 13, 1676 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller.

Live and act

Isaac Commelin is the son of Jean Commelin (approx. 1548–1615) and his wife Catharina Jansdr Valckenier (approx. 1560–1621). On October 4, 1626 he married Cornelia Bouwer (1607–1641), who later became the mother of the botanist Jan Commelin .

From 1626 he worked as a bookseller and publisher in Leiden . After the death of his wife, he moved with the family to Amsterdam in 1641.

In 1646 he published the work he had compiled Begin Ende Voortgangh, Van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie (German: "Beginning and End of the Dutch East India Company"). It contains contributions by 21 authors and is the most important compilation on the history of the Dutch East India Company . The work is equipped with 230 maps and illustrations.

Other significant compilations that he published were the collection on the history of Princes Wilhelm and Moritz of Orange , published in 1651, and the brief description of Amsterdam published in 1665 under the title Beschriyvinge van Amsterdam.

Isaac Commelin was a distinguished citizen of Amsterdam. In 1647 he became head of the Nieuwe Zijds Huiszittenhuis and in 1655 head of the Sint Pietergasthuis in Amsterdam.
