Jan Johan Koenderink (* 1943 ) is a Dutch physicist , mathematician and computer scientist who is primarily concerned with research into visual perception.

Life

Koenderink studied mathematics, physics and astronomy at the University of Utrecht with a diploma in 1967 and a doctorate in 1972. He then went to the Universities of Utrecht and Groningen, before receiving a full professorship for physics and astronomy in Utrecht in 1978. In 2008 he retired. From 2010 he was visiting professor at MIT, at the Catholic University of Leuven and from 2013 again in Utrecht.

He deals with psychophysics (experimental psychology) and cognitive science in the field of visual perception, theoretical neurophysiology of the senses and theoretical cognitive sciences, colorimetry, differential geometry of curves and surfaces in three-dimensional space, computer vision and image processing. Koenderink developed filters named after him in the analysis of the CMB .

In 1990 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and in 2010 of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences. In 2013 he received the Azriel Rosenfeld Prize from the ICCV . In 1987 he received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2015 he received the Wolfgang Metzger Prize of the Society for Gestalt Theory and its Applications and in 2016 a Humboldt Research Prize .
