Jan Kurfeld

Jan Kurfeld (born December 23, 1987 in Wismar ) is a young German sailor who won the Junior World Championship and the German and North German championship titles in the Olympic Finn dinghy class in2007.

In May 2008 he won the European Junior Championship and at the same time took 23rd place in the field of seniors. In September 2008 he was able to successfully defend his title as International German Champion on Lake Constance against 91 competitors from nine nations. Kurfeld starts for the yacht club Wismar 1961 e. V.

With six years in January Kurfeld started in his home town of Wismar sail and took the first time at an age of seven years racing in the class Optimist part. Since 2005 he has been a member of the German federal squad. Due to his physical development, combined with the resulting weight gain, he decided at the end of 2006 to switch from the Olympic boat class Laser Standard , which he had previously sailed, to the Olympic boat class Finn-Dinghy.

Kurfeld attended the Helene-Weigel-Gymnasium (later branch of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium) in Wismar up to the 11th grade. In the summer of 2005 he switched to the sports high school CJD Jugenddorf-Christophorusschule Rostock , where he graduated from high school in July 2007. From October 1 to August 30, 2008, he completed his basic military service with the sports promotion group of the German Armed Forces in Rostock . Since September 1, 2008, Kurfeld has been studying nautical science / maritime transport at the Maritime Department of the University of Wismar in Warnemünde .
