Jan Kanty Ignacy Maszkowski (born October 16, 1794 in Chorostków , Podolia (today Ukraine ), † October 20, 1865 in Barszczowice near Lemberg ) was a Polish painter.

Live and act

Thanks to the support of Józef Lewicki, owner of Chorostków around 1813, he studied for six years at the Estates Academy of Lviv University . He received drawing lessons from Josef Buisset; From 1818 to 1820 he was at the Vienna Academy with Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder and Heinrich Friedrich Füger . From 1820 to the end of 1824 he stayed in Rome. He then lived for a few months in Vienna, from May 1825 in Lemberg and from 1826 in Podolia and Volhynia. In the autumn of 1832 Jan Maszkowski settled permanently in Lemberg and was one of the leading representatives of the art scene there. From 1834 to 1843 he taught at the Estates Academy, after which it closed in his own studio.

Maszkowski achieved great merits as a teacher, whose students included artists such as Juliusz Kossak , Artur Grottger and Stanisław Tarnowski .

Jan Maszkowski was the father and teacher of the draftsman, lithographer, painter and sculptor Marceli Maszkowski and the mathematician, sculptor and draftsman Karol Maszkowski and the grandfather of Karol Zyndram Maszkowski.

Portraits

In the Lviv period from 1832, his mature creative phase, he achieved great recognition as a portraitist. In his portraits in the Biedermeier style, the realistic reproduction of the models was appreciated.
