Jan Mostaert
Jan Mostaert (* around 1475 in Haarlem ; † 1555 there ) was a Dutch painter .
Life
Mostaert came from a well-known family of painters and learned the craft in his hometown of Haarlem. In 1504 he became court painter to Margaret of Austria , the regent of the Netherlands. He accompanied his patroness on her travels, visited Italy and acquired some Italian motifs. In essence, however, he retained the older style of the Netherlands , as his best-known work, the triptych "Descent from the Cross" in Brussels , shows. He painted many portraits and fantasy scenes from the New World. He died in Haarlem, where many of his works were destroyed by fire in 1576.
