Jan Quaegebeur

Jan Quaegebeur (born December 14, 1943 in Tielt ; † August 10, 1995 ) was a Belgian Egyptologist and professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .

Career

Jan Quaegebeur attended St. Jozefcollege in his hometown Tielt . The mother's brother Jozef Vergote (1910–1992), professor of Egyptology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, aroused interest in ancient Egypt early on. Quaegebeur later studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and received the license for Classical Philology and Oriental Studies in 1967 with a thesis on Strabo in Egypt. In 1969 he completed his studies of the Egyptian language with Herman De Meulenaere at the University of Ghent . 1970/1971 he continued his studies in Egypt under the direction of Serge Sauneron (1927-1976). 1971/1972 he studied in Paris with George Posener , Jean Jacques Clère , Jean Yoyotte and Françoise de Cénival . He later continued the studies of the demotic language that had begun there with Pieter Willem Pestman at the University of Leiden . In 1973 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the ancient Egyptian god Shai . Since 1977 he has been Professor of Egyptology in Leuven.
