Pieter Willem Pestman

Pieter Willem Pestman (born April 28, 1933 in Amsterdam , † May 14, 2010 in Pancalieri , Italy) was a Dutch professor of papyrology at the University of Leiden .

Career

Pieter Willem Pestman studied law at Utrecht University , where he graduated in 1953. He then studied papyrology and ancient Egyptian law at the University of Leiden. 1960/61 he spent three months in Paris to study demotic with Michel Malinine (1900–1977) . 1961 doctorate Pestman with the work Marriage and Matrimonial Property in Ancient Egypt .

After receiving his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Papyrology at the University of Leiden. In 1969 he was appointed director of the institute. In 1982 and 1983 he was Dean of the Law Faculty of Leiden University. Since 1985 he has been a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature and Fine Arts of Belgium ; since 1992 member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . In the same year he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bologna . In 1998 he retired.
