Jan Schröder

Jan Schröder (born November 15, 1800 in Vlissingen , † May 2, 1885 in Kleve ) was a Dutch naval officer who later became vice admiral in German service .

Life

Schröder first entered the French Navy in 1812 and in February 1814 transferred to the Dutch Navy with the rank of midshipman , where he served until 1846. In the same year he entered the Prussian service and on July 4, 1846 became councilor fourth class. He was the director of the main navigation school in Gdansk and temporarily commanding the sailing corvette Amazone .

1848-49 he became a member of the technical naval commission of the government set up by the Frankfurt National Assembly and took part in the development of the German imperial fleet . At the same time, he served as a commodore in the Prussian Navy, which was under construction, and led its training squadron during a trip to South America in 1852/53. Schröder was promoted to Rear Admiral on May 17, 1854 as the first naval officer in the Prussian Navy .

From 1859 to 1860 he was head of the Prussian naval administration. After retiring from active service, he died in Kleve in 1885.
