Jan Wils (painter)
Jan Wils (* around 1600 in Amsterdam ; buried October 18, 1666 in Haarlem ; occasionally also called Johannes or Hans ) was a Dutch landscape painter and draftsman from the Dutch Golden Age . He is one of the representatives of the so-called Dutch Italian drivers ("Dutch Italianates") and preferred to paint Italian motifs with shepherds in the tradition of Jan Both .
Life
Jan Wils was the son of Jan Wils Pieterzn van Rousburg and Cuycken Aerts from Den Bosch . Wils became a member of the Haarlem vigilante group in 1628 and was listed in the same year as a member of the St. Luke's Guild ( Sint Lucas Gilde ). In 1629 he married Margrietje Cornelisdr., Who brought a daughter, Catrijne, into the marriage.
In 1634 he was listed in the documents of the Guild of St. Luke as an art dealer and no longer as a painter; it was not until 1661 that he was mentioned again as a painter.
At the advanced age of over 50 he traveled south and stayed in Rome in 1654/55 and then in Vienne . Drawings of Lyon and the surrounding area have survived from this period. His work is comparatively small; which may be related to the fact that he also held the office of beer tax collector for the city of Haarlem and painting was probably just a sideline for him.
Wils wrote his will on October 12, 1666, and was buried six days later.
Wils was Nicolaes Berchem's teacher and father-in-law , whom he had a major influence. Berchem had Wils' stepdaughter Catrijne Claesdr in 1646. de Groot married.
