Jan da Hornay (also João de Hornay , other spellings d'Ornay , de Hornai ) was a Dutch mestizo in the 17th century who first worked for the Dutch East India Company before moving to the Portuguese .

history

Jan da Hornay was the Dutch commander of the fortress of Solor from 1627 . But in 1629 he defected to the Portuguese, became a Catholic and returned control of the island to the Dominicans . Jan da Hornay went to Larantuka . There he married a Timorese slave and with his two sons António and Francisco founded a family clan that, alongside the Costas, became the leading family of the Topasse , which over time, despite nominal subordination to the Portuguese, took power over Solor, West Timor and neighboring countries Islands. Costas and Hornays also repeatedly connected through marriage. The clan is now considered extinct on Timor, but various ruling families of Timor adopted the name Hornay to enhance their legitimacy. The name can still be found on the island today. In Oe-Cusse , farmers still pay traditional rice to the Hornay family on Good Friday . He is now accepted by the ruling family of the Costas.
