Jan de Hartog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan de Hartog (born April 22, 1914 in Haarlem , North Holland , † September 22, 2002 in Houston , Texas ) was a Dutch author .

life and work

Jan de Hartog initially published a number of detective novels under the pseudonym FR Eckmar (verrekmaar) . He was best known for his book Hollands Glorie , about the beginning of the Dutch sea towing. The book was filmed as a television series in 1976.

In the spring of 1940 he played a leading role in the (mobilization) film Ergens in Nederland (Somewhere in the Netherlands), for which he previously designed the scenario.

He and his wife emigrated to the United States , where he wrote various novels on social topics, which he himself translated into Dutch, including a story of the Quakers in four parts.

His book Gods geuzen is about the mission in the primeval forests of Indonesia . Stella , Mary and Thalassa are all about shipping. De Kapitein is a later revision of Mary , and is the first part of the adventure series about the fictional Captain Harinxma, with the other parts De Commodore , De Centurio and De Buitenboei .

After the publication of Het Ziekenhuis (The Hospital) about grievances in an American hospital, he himself had to leave the city where the action took place ( Houston ).

Another book that was also made into a film is De Kleine Ark (The Little Ark), which is set during the flooding of large parts of the Netherlands in 1953. Jan de Hartog also provided help to rescue flood victims. Still, there are doubts that this book is therefore autobiographical. At least the book reflects the problems with the rescue operations in a country that suffered another major catastrophe so shortly after the end of World War II in the phase of reconstruction.

Herinneringen van een bramzijgertje describes a young man who, like Jan de Hartog at a young age, goes to sea, in this case on the Zuiderzee . When the bramzijgertje (the cabin boy) tells his adventures at home, he notices how the audience is hanging on his lips and realizes that he is a born storyteller.

In De Inspector , which was also made into a film, the difficult emigration is a traumatized Jewish girl from a concentration camp has returned to Israel, described immediately after the Second World War.

The fury in Maassluis

In 2004, his widow unveiled a plaque in Maassluis to commemorate Jan de Hartog because of the city's connection with sea towing, one of his main themes. The commemorative plaque is placed near the steam tugboat Furie , the ship that played an important role in the television adaptation of Holland's Glory in 1976 .
