Jane Elizabeth Bingham Abbott (born Jane Bingham, also Jennie Abbott; born March 19, 1851 in Charlotteville, Vermont , United States, † March 21, 1934 in Chicago , Illinois , United States ) was an American singer, pianist and composer .

Life

Jane Abbott was the daughter of Reverend Joel Smith Bingham (1815-1894) and Jane Robbins (1815-1898). Her grandfather was General Rufus Putnam. She lived in Boston with her parents around 1870 . On March 25, 1879, she married Charles Fuller Abbott (1847-1900) in Dubuque . Her sons Samuel Bingham Abbott (1881-1893) and Julian Fuller Abbott (1887-1893) died in April 1893 of diphtheria . Other children were the doctor Donald Putnam Abbott (1884-1936) and the university librarian Ruth Abbott (1880-1933). She later lived in Chicago with her family.

Jane Bingham Abbott published several songs. Her best-known was Just for today, which became the standard repertoire of sacred concerts throughout her life. It has been performed and recorded many times in the United States.

  • Just for today , text: Sibyl F.Partridge, 1893 edition for alto and piano in F orchestral version recorded on the Victor label on May 19, 1914 with Christine Miller, on September 11, 1916 with Elsie Baker , on June 1, 1921 with Louise Homer. Further versions with piano accompaniment and a version with organ and violin were recorded with Beecher C. Burton, JL Selby and A. Stewart Holt.
