Jane Evelyn McGonigal (born October 21, 1977 in Philadelphia ) is an American computer game developer and author .

Jane McGonigal grew up as a teacher in New Jersey . Her twin sister Kelly is a psychologist and writer. Jane graduated from Fordham University and received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006 . Then she worked as a designer on computer games . She is Director of Game Research & Development at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto .

In 2005 McGonigal received the Innovation Award from the International Game Developers Association .
