Hans Müller (born January 13, 1915 in Düsseldorf , † December 4, 1994 in Beijing , Chinese  汉斯 米勒 , Pinyin Hànsī Mǐlè ) was a German- Chinese doctor .

Life

Hans Müller grew up in a wealthy family in Düsseldorf-Golzheim , his father was Jewish . His mother was related to the Hamburg shipowner Albert Ballin . After visiting the Hindenburg-Gymnasium in Dusseldorf he studied at the University of Basel medicine .

After completing his studies in 1939, because of his Jewish origins, he did not return to Germany, but rather emigrated to Hong Kong via France on the recommendation of a Chinese friend from university, who then introduced him to Song Qingling . With the help of the influential Song Qingling, Hans Müller took the last transport to Yan'an , the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party , where he then worked as a doctor in the local hospital for two years . With the first x-ray machine there, he also x- rayed Mao Zedong .

Meanwhile, Hans Müller identified with the goals of the Chinese Communist Party and the fight against fascism . He managed to be transferred to a fighting unit of the People's Liberation Army , where he cared for the wounded and eventually fell ill with typhus . After the war ended in 1945, he tried to return to Germany, but failed because of the Chinese civil war . During the war, his mother from Shanghai unsuccessfully selected him , while his father survived the deportation.

Hans Müller stayed with the People's Liberation Army until 1949 , where he also met his future wife, the Japanese Kyoko Nakamura, with whom he later had the daughter Mimi. In 1951 he received the Chinese citizenship. He took care of the expansion of medical care in northern China and held leading positions in hospitals. He criticized traditional Chinese medicine and took part in hepatitis research with the development of a vaccine that is still used , for which he received the highest state award for medicine. In 1974 he paid a brief visit to Düsseldorf . In 1983 he was elected to the National People's Congress. He died after decades of heart disease .
