Janek Schmidkunz (born March 16, 1990 in Berlin ) is a German basketball player . He has been in the squad of third division Dresden Titans since 2017 .

career

Schmidkunz began his basketball career in the youth of TuS Neukölln in his hometown of Berlin. Between 2007 and 2009 he played for Central Hoops Berlin in the youth basketball league and in the 2008/09 season also in the men's team in the 1st regional league. After completing his youth career, Schmidkunz moved to the second men's team from Alba Berlin and played there under coach Henrik Rödl in the 1st regional league.

In 2010 Schmidkunz went to the United States for four years : he studied economics at the American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts , and played for the college's basketball team in the second division of the NCAA . During his four-year stay in the USA, he completed a total of 86 games for "AIC" and achieved an average of 9.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per use. Schmidkunz drew attention to himself, among other things, with his accuracy in throwing from distance and hit 231 three-point throws in 86 college games.

In 2014 he returned to Germany and signed his first professional contract with USC Heidelberg from the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . In 21 games for Heidelberg he averaged 1.4 points per game. Schmidkunz moved to TSV Nördlingen in the third division, 2nd Bundesliga ProB , for the 2015/16 season . There it came into its own much better than in Heidelberg and was a top performer for the Nördlinger. He booked 29 ProB missions and achieved averages of 17.1 points as well as 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

His good performance in his time in Nördlingen enabled him to return to the second division: at the end of June 2016, the Gotha Rockets signed him. Due to a metacarpal fracture in mid-December 2016, he had to pause until mid-March 2017. He was runner-up with Gotha, which meant promotion to the Bundesliga. Schmidkunz played a total of 30 games in the 2016/17 season and scored 5.9 points per game.

In summer 2017 he switched to the Dresden Titans in the ProB. There he was appointed team captain in September 2017.
