Jangipur is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city belongs to the Murshidabad district . Jangipur has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 20 wards .
history
The city is said to have been founded by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir . That is why this city is also known as Jahangirpur . In the early years of British rule, it was an important center of the silk trade and the location of one of the British East India Company's commercial branches .
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 88,165 and that of the metropolitan area is 122,731. Jangipur has a gender ratio of 961 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 79.2% in 2011. Almost 62% of the population are Muslim , approx. 38% are Hindus and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 13.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
