Jansen is an impact crater in the northern area of the Mare Tranquillitatis . It is located east-southeast of the Pliny crater .

Jansen's crater rim is narrow and low and has a notch on the west side. The inside of the crater is relatively flat, which could indicate flooding by lava . The crater floor is marked by a small conspicuous crater that lies in the south-southwest halfway between the center of the crater and the rim.

To the northeast of the crater lies the Rima Jansen lunar furrow, so named after him, and in the east, rugged hills rise above the lunar surface. From the southeastern rim of the crater, a low ridge runs in a southeastern direction. To the east lies beyond the Dorsa Barlow of the crater Cajal in the area of the Sea of Tranquility .
