Janus Kadel (born May 24, 1936 in Berlin as Joachim Kurt Kadel; † February 5, 2006 there ) was a German painter and object artist.

Live and act

Janus Kadel first studied applied painting from 1953 to 1960, then at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin, today Berlin University of the Arts , with Professor Hans Orlowski . After graduating as a master class student, he designed church windows in Britz and Schmargendorf (art in architecture) and took part in the Berlin artist emergency program. In the 1950s, Kadel painted tachistically - informal art was the answer to art under National Socialism and Socialist Realism . Later he painted abstract, representational and abstracting-representational, the focus of his pictures was the human figure, especially the portrait. His figurative, expressive painting was also influenced by Berlin neo-expressionism .

From 1967 he had his first exhibitions and took part in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. From 1975 to 1996 he ran a Janus shop with junk and antiques, but continued to work as an artist. Since 1997 he has received permanent funding from the Office of the Federal President. He died of cancer. The Berlin author Gabriele Schmelz has been looking after Janus Kadel's artistic estate since 2006 and curating exhibitions of his works.
