The interpretation of the blood group is a belief that is widespread, especially in Japan , according to which the blood group ( Japanese 血液 型 ketsueki-gata ) allows conclusions to be drawn about the personality , character and compatibility of a person with others. The phenomenon has a comparable status in everyday Japanese life as the zodiac signs in the West, but is partly based on racist resentment. This belief is increasingly found in other parts of East Asia, namely South Korea and Taiwan .

Scientific evaluation

While research has shown that the susceptibility to certain ailments also depends on the blood group, no study has so far been able to prove a correlation between blood group and personality. Indirectly, however, reference is made to the fact that a genetically different set of hormones and enzymes can influence the development of a number of character traits.

Development in Japan

The founder of efforts to infer personality traits from blood group was the Japanese psychologist Furukawa Takeji . In 1927 he published a number of articles with his hypotheses. In turn, the psychologist Nomi Masahiko referred to Furukawa in his book Compatibility According to Blood Group (1971). Describing his approach, Nomi said, “Every part of you - nose, eyes, hair, or brain - has the same blood type. It only seems natural that your personality and your feelings will be influenced. ”Nomi's son Toshitaka succeeded his father as the supreme authority on blood group interpretation: he wrote 15 books on the subject and runs his own institute in Tokyo.

The greatest popularity has the blood type interpretation in women's magazines and the like. Here it is used to find out whether a partner is a match or not. Horoscopes for the different blood groups appear daily in magazines, newspapers, television and radio.

In Japan, the question of blood type is just as normal as, for example, the question of the zodiac in other countries. Refusal to provide information can be interpreted as a sign that the person is ashamed of their blood type.

The lack of scientific backing has not hindered the development of a thriving market for matchmaking services by blood type and recruiters to help entrepreneurs find the right mix of blood types in their workforce.

The phenomenon is omnipresent in Japanese popular culture as well. Every Japanese teenager knows their idol's blood type. Even fictional characters from manga and computer games are given the right blood type by their creators.
