The Japanese giant bass ( Lates japonicus ) is a large predatory fish found in southern Japan. The rare fish has been found in Tosa Bay in Kōchi Prefecture on Shikoku Island and on Kyūshū in Miyazaki Prefecture .

It is a maximum of 130 centimeters long and can reach a maximum weight of 33 kg. The Japanese giant perch differs from the Barramundi ( Lates calcarifer ), whose distribution area adjoins to the south, by a body that is higher in relation to its length, a third dorsal fin spine that is longer than the pelvic fins. The second fin spine of the anal fin is longer than the third (the other way around in Lates calcarifer ). The pectoral fins are supported by 16 rays (17 or 18 in Lates calcarifer ).
Adult Japanese giant bass are gray in color with a bluish or silvery sheen, lighter on the underside, with black fins and deep red eyes. Young fish are dark brown with two light yellow longitudinal bands.
