The Tosa Bay ( Japanese 土 佐 湾 , Tosa-wan ) is a large bay on the Japanese island of Shikoku . It extends from Cape Muroto-zaki ( 室 戸 岬 ; 33 ° 14 ′ 41 ″ N , 134 ° 10 ′ 34 ″ E ) in the east to Cape Ashizuri-misaki ( 足 摺 岬 ; 32 ° 43 ′ 25 ″ N , 134 ° 1 ′ 13 ″ E ) in the west over a width of 130 km with a coastline of 240 km.
The central part is distinguished by its Riyal coast , the most striking features of which are Susaki Bay ( 須 崎 湾 , Susaki-wan , also called Kimpo Bay ( 錦 浦 湾 , Kimpo-wan ); 33 ° 22 ′ N , 133 ° 17 ′ E ) and in particular the Uranouchi Bay ( 浦 ノ 内 湾 , Uranouchi-wan ; 33 ° 26 ′ N , 133 ° 24 ′ E ). Slightly east is the Urado Bay ( 浦戸湾 , Urado-wan ; 33 ° 31 ' N , 133 ° 33' O ). 70% of the area extends over the continental shelf , while the southern areas extend over the continental slope . In terms of climate and fishing, the bay is strongly influenced by the warm Kuroshio current. Important tributaries are the first order rivers Shimanto , which flows into the west, and Niyodo between the Uranouchi and Urado Bay.
The bay is named after the former province of Tosa , today Prefecture of Kōchi , which stretches along its coast, in detail the communities Tosashimizu , Shimanto (district), Kuroshio , Shimanto (Takaoka district), Nakatosa , Susaki , Tosa , Kōchi , Nankoku , Kōnan , Geisei , Aki , Yasuda , Tano , Nahari and Muroto .
