Jardín Borda is a property with gardens in Cuernavaca , one of the characteristic buildings in the capital of the Mexican state of Morelos . The total area of the property extends over 27,569 , of which the building occupies 4,015 m² and the garden 23,554 m².

history

The original garden was built by the architect José Manuel Arrieta and acquired in 1763 by the Spanish entrepreneur José de la Borda. After his death in 1778, his son Manuel de la Borda y Verdugo inherited the property and had it remodeled.

In 1865, the then imperial couple of Mexico , Maximiliano and Carlota , chose the property as their summer residence and held celebrations here. Later, the Mexican Presidents Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada , Porfirio Díaz , Francisco Madero and Plutarco Elías Calles, as well as other people from Mexican history , such as the painter Diego Rivera and the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata , visited the Jardín Borda.

After the Mexican railroad arrived in Cuernavaca in 1897, the property was converted into a hotel and restaurant owned by Wells Fargo .

In 1950, the investor Elmer Ray Jones wanted to demolish the property and replace it with a modern hotel complex. The project failed due to massive resistance from the population of Cuernavaca. Today the building houses a museum that occupies seven of the 13 rooms. The remaining six rooms are available for temporary exhibitions.
