Jardin des plantes de Lyon

The Jardin des plantes de Lyon is a public park at the foot of the hill in the La Croix-Rousse district in Lyon and the city's former botanical garden . It is the predecessor of the Jardin botanique de Lyon, laid out in 1857 in the Parc de la Tête d'Or . In the eastern part of the park lies the Roman amphitheater of Lyon, which was uncovered in 1958 .

history

The botanist Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert wanted to set up a botanical garden in Lyon and planned it in 1765 in the Les Brotteaux district , but this was not implemented. On August 20, 1796, the department administration decided to create a botanical garden. Gilibert took over the management of the project and it was decided to create a garden with exotic and native plants on the land of the former monastery of the "Dames de la Déserte" on the slopes of La Croix-Rousse. Initially used as the school garden of the École centrale, the garden was opened to the public in 1820. In 1857 the garden became too narrow. As it was impossible to enlarge it, the Prefect Claude-Marius Vaïsse had the garden with its 4000 plants relocated to what is now the Parc de la Tête d'Or , which was then newly laid out. The Jardin botanique de Lyon is located there to this day.
