Jean Emmanuel Gilibert (born June 21, 1741 in Lyon ; † September 2, 1814 there ) was a French doctor and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Gilib. "

Life

Gilibert studied medicine in Montpellier from 1760 to 1764 and was then a doctor in Lyon. In his spare time he collected plants in the area of Lyon and laid out a botanical garden , which he had to give up due to lack of public support. Through the mediation of Albrecht von Haller and Antoine Gouan , he was commissioned in 1774 to renew the teaching of medicine and natural history in Vilnius . He was in Vilnius from 1775 to 1783, where he also laid out a botanical garden. This also led to works on the flora of Lithuania. This "Flora lithuanica" is not recognized according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Names of Species and Taxa within the Species, because Gilibert did not follow the binary nomenclature consistently. His successor in office in Lithuania was Georg Forster .

From 1783 he was a doctor at the hospital ( Hôtel-Dieu ) in Lyon . In addition, he published botanical works and he also managed to achieve the establishment of a botanical garden (in the old Abbey of Déserte), of which he became director in 1805. In the French Revolution he was politically active on the side of the Girondins and in 1793 became mayor of Lyon. During the reign of terror he had to flee and only returned after the fall of Robespierre and was professor of natural history in Lyon.

He revised the new edition (4th edition 1796) of the Démonstrations élémentaires de botanique by Marc Antoine Louis Claret de La Tourrette (1729-1793) and Abbé François Rozier (1734-1793). Both were botanists in Lyon and responsible for setting up the first botanical garden in Lyon at the veterinary college.
