Jarki ( Russian Ярки ) is an island in the northern part of Lake Baikal , not far from the village of Nizhneangarsk at the mouth of the Kitschera River in the Severo-Baikalski Raion of the Russian Republic of Buryatia . In the shape of an arch, the spit extends from northwest to southeast over a length of more than 14 km with a width of 100 m in the central part and about 400 m at its ends. The island, originally formed from sediments, separates the delta of the Upper Angara and Kitschera rivers from Lake Baikal to the south , so that a shallow lagoon was formed.

Before the construction of the Irkutsk reservoir in the 1950s and the associated rise in the water level of Lake Baikal by 0.8 m, the island had an area of 3.7 km², today it is about 1.8 km². Due to its sandy geological structure, there is a risk of the island being destroyed, accompanied by the formation of ridges. The mean subsurface speed from 1976 to 2006 was around 16 m³ per year and meter. The erosion process has been intensified since the 1970s by reducing the amount of entrained river sediments. According to experts, the island is of great importance in the Baikal ecosystem. If it were destroyed, the polluted, swampy lagoon water could end up in the lake and cause an ecological disaster.

The vegetation is characterized by dwarf pine and birch groves.

The mostly natural sandy beaches are starting to be marketed for tourism. In protected areas, the water can heat up to 24 ° C.
