Jaromír Funke

Jaromír Funke (born August 1, 1896 in Skuteč , Eastern Bohemia, now the Czech Republic , † March 22, 1945 in Prague ) was a Czech photographer . He is considered to be the most influential representative of Czech avant-garde photography and the most exposed representative of New Objectivity in Czechoslovakia in the interwar period.

life and work

Funke was the son of a family of lawyers from Kolín ; after studying medicine (1915-18) he moved to Prague. At the local Charles University he first studied law , which he broke off to study art history , philosophy and aesthetic theory . After turning to photography, he worked as a freelance photographer from 1922, was a member of the progressive Prague Photo Club , Česká fotografická spolecnost and the photographic section of the Mánes Association of Visual Artists . From 1931 he was also a lecturer a. a. active at the School of Applied Arts in Pressburg and the State Graphic School in Prague. During his time in Bratislava he worked on documentary photography and was a member of the left-wing group Sociofoto , which thematized the living conditions of marginalized people. From 1939-41 he worked with Josef Ehm as editor of the magazine Fotografik obzor (Photographic Horizon). Funke also emerged as a theorist and was active as a journalist with articles and essays. He was friends with Josef Sudek and is considered the antipode of Karel Teige , which is why he was not represented at the Stuttgart exhibition Film and Photo from 1929. When the war broke out, he limited himself to photographs in the Louny area ; in August 1944 he survived the bombing raids in Kolin. He died in March 1945 in an emergency operation that occurred after perforating the small intestine. In the realism debate of the socialist post-war period, his avant-garde style was discredited in Czechoslovakia.
