Javan Marinho

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Javan Marinho , also known by the nickname El Popeye , is a former Brazilian football player in the position of striker .

career

Marinho, who grew up in the Madureira district of Rio de Janeiro , began his career in 1958 in the junior division of CR Vasco da Gama and made his professional debut in a city derby against CR Flamengo , which was won 1-0.

In 1963 Marinho received an offer from Club America , after which he moved to Mexico . For the Americanistas, however, he did not play a competitive game because he soon suffered an injury and had to take a two-month break. After recovery, he was loaned to the North Mexican club CF Monterrey , with whom he reached the cup final of the 1963/64 season against his actual employer, America. The originally scheduled final ended in a draw, as did the replay required, so a penalty shoot-out was necessary, in which CF Monterrey lost 4-5.

After America did not want to bring him back after the season, Marinho moved to Club León , for which he played in the 1964/65 season. Because he didn't really feel at home there and also wanted to live in Mexico City with his newly married wife , he switched to Club Necaxa in 1965, which was then still based in the capital . With the Necaxistas, Marinho immediately won the Mexican Cup competition in his first season in 1965/66 and then also the Supercup (thanks to a 2-0 win against his former employer America!) . Marinho was under contract with Club Necaxa until at least 1970.
