Javier Heraud

Javier Heraud Pérez (born January 19, 1942 in Miraflores (Lima) , Peru , † May 15, 1963 in Madre de Dios , Peru) was a Peruvian poet and writer.

Life

Javier Heraud was the son of Jorge Heraud Cricet and Victoria Pérez Tellería. In 1958 he began studying at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru . From 1960 he worked as an English teacher. In 1960 he began studying at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos . In the same year he published his first poems. For El Viaje he was awarded in a competition for young authors. In 1962 he joined the social democratic Movimiento Social Progresista (MSP) , from which he soon left.

After his father forced him to change universities and subjects, he went on trips abroad and received a scholarship from Cuba, where he met Fidel Castro . In 1963 he returned to Peru to fight as a guerrilla fighter in the ranks of the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) operating from Bolivia against the reformist military dictatorship under General Godoy . He was arrested and shot with three companions while fleeing in a canoe.

His work can be regarded as typical of the generación del 60 , which was strongly politicized by reformist and revolutionary ideas and saw the Cuban revolution as a model.

Afterlife

Javier Heraud's death affected many Peruvian intellectuals of the generación del 60 . Mario Vargas Llosa brings up this in his novel The Storyteller .
