Jay Whitehead

Jay E. Whitehead (born October 12, 1961 in New York City , † October 4, 2011 in San Francisco ) was an American chess player .

Life

Jay Whitehead learned the game during the chess boom set off by Bobby Fischer by winning the 1972 World Chess Championship in the USA together with his one and a half year older brother Paul, who also became a good player. At the World Youth Championship in 1977 for the U17 age group in Cagnes-sur-Mer Jay Whitehead came with 8.5 points from 11 games in 2nd place, ahead of third-placed Garri Kasparow , against whom he played a draw. In 1981 he won the US Junior Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona with 6 points from 7 games (+5 = 2 −0). At the national championship of the USA he took part in 1983 (10th place) and 1987 (12th place). He was awarded the title of International Master in 1986. Jay Whitehead later withdrew from active tournament play, who found it difficult to get over defeat. He had already joined the Hare Krishna movement in 1984 . During the last two decades of his life he devoted himself to chess history and worked on building a comprehensive chess database of games that were played before 1867. He died of cancer.
