Jazz in 3/4 Time is an album of American jazz - drummer Max Roach . The tracks contained therein were recorded in March 1957 and September 1956 and released by the EmArcy Records label.

Importance of the album

In the mid-1950s, drummer Roach led a quintet with Clifford Brown , which he continued after his death. Kenny Dorham was the new trumpeter. With one exception, the pianist of these recordings was Billy Wallace, who is recognized as one of the few two-handed hardbop piano players, even if there are no later recordings of him.

The album, which was recorded almost without exception in Hollywood in March 1957, differs from other contemporary recordings in its radical selection of the pieces to be interpreted. It was the first album in the history of jazz that only contained jazz waltzes . In addition to three standards, which were presented here in three-quarter time , unlike in jazz up until then , the album contained two original compositions by the band leader and the very extensive Valse Hot by saxophonist Sonny Rollins.

reception

According to All About Jazz , at the time of its release the album was judged to be somewhat revolutionary because of the waltz program. Allmusic rated the album with four stars; Scott Yanow wrote that the album with its outstanding performances proves "that jazz doesn't always have to be in 4/4 time to swing".
