Jazz in the church

Jazz in der Kirche was a music festival that was held every two years between 2004 and 2008 in the city of Mönchengladbach . After a ten-year break, a new edition is planned for 2018 by the JazzClub Mönchengladbach association .

history

From 2004 to 2008, jazz in the church was organized by the Department of Education and Music, Municipal Music Funding. The festival took place in Mönchengladbach for the first time in June 2004 . Together with the Catholic and Evangelical Church Congregations and the Working Group of Church Musicians in Mönchengladbach, the Department of Continuing Education and Music put together a program with high artistic standards.
The festival wants to focus on the church as a place of meditation, sensuality, silence and music as well as a fixed point of modernity through the presentation of jazz . Here is Jazz viewed as a modern synonym for old and new improvised music. Thanks to the cooperation with church musicians from the city, especially those from the diocese of Aachen , renowned international, national and local jazz musicians, especially those from the Netherlands, could be engaged.

In 2004 over 2500 spectators experienced 14 concerts over 10 days. Highlights of the program were a. the opening concert of the WDR Big Band Cologne , the performance of the gospel musician , Melbra Rai and the organ concert of the jazz musician Barbara Dennerlein .

In 2006 around 2500 spectators experienced 13 concerts. International musicians such as B. Markus Stockhausen , Lydia van Dam , Ramesh Shotham and Jasper van't Hof performed a high-quality, varied program.

In 2008 there were concerts by u. a. Leonid Chizhik and band, Wolfgang Seifen and Leonard Gincberg , as well as Nicolas Simion and band.
