Jean-Armand de Rotondis de Biscarras even Rotondy de Biscaras , († 15th / 16th February 1702 in Béziers ) was bishop of the southern French dioceses Digne (1668-1669), Lodève (1669-1671) and Beziers (1671-1702) .

Life

Jean-Armand de Rotondis de Biscarras was a son of Jacques de Rotondis de Biscarras, infantry colonel, governor of Charleville and in command of the fortress of Mont-Olympe . His mother was Françoise de Gleizenove. He was a doctor of theology at the University of Paris and was appointed Bishop of Digne in April 1668. Ordained bishop in January 1669, he swore the oath of allegiance to the king on January 23rd, but never saw his diocese because in April King Louis XIV transferred him to the bishopric of Lodève, which was vacant after the death of Roger de Harlay . On October 20, Bishop Biscarras took the oath of allegiance again, but did not keep this diocese for long either, but was transferred to Béziers by decree of January 5, 1671. On April 25, 1672 he took the oath for the third time before the king, but did not take possession of his diocese until May 3, 1673 and was solemnly introduced to Béziers on May 26, 1673.

In 1675, Bishop de Biscarras held a diocesan synod and issued some instructions, which were printed in 1675 by Henri Martel and again in 1738 by Barbut under the title Instructions de Saint Charles Borromée aux confesseurs . In 1676 he assisted in several episcopal ordinations in Paris. In 1678 he gave the seminary built in Béziers in 1672 to the Lazarists . During this time he also had the Hôpital Mage ( Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques ), which had existed since 1513, enlarged and expanded. On April 28, 1679, together with several bishops, he assisted the Archbishop of Narbonne, Cardinal Pierre de Bonzi , in laying the foundation stone for the Abbey Church of Aniane . On the occasion of the opening of the Canal des Deux Mers in May 1681, he held a solemn pontifical mass in the Saint-Nazaire cathedral and blessed the new ship connection at the head of a solemn procession. In 1686 he reconstituted the general hospital (Hôpital Général) prescribed by a royal decree of 1662 for all larger cities but neglected in Béziers and made sure that it could support itself financially. After King Ludwig allowed the city of Béziers to hold an annual market in the same year, a covered market hall was built for this purpose.

Mgr de Biscarras did not participate in the violent measures carried out against the Protestants in some places after the edict of Nantes was repealed in 1685. After the Landtag of the province of Languedoc had decided to build barracks in all important cities, it succeeded in getting the diocese to bear part of the costs and thus relieving the city of Béziers. He spent considerable sums on the rebuilding of the bishop's palace, in which he received the dukes of Burgundy ( Louis de Bourbon ) and Berry ( Charles de Bourbon ) traveling through Beziérs in 1701 .

Bishop de Biscarras died on February 15 or 16, 1702 after a long illness and was buried in the cathedral of Beziérs.
