Jean-Baptiste Carnoy

Jean-Baptiste Carnoy (born January 11 or January 22, 1836 in Rumillies near Tournai (Belgium), † September 6, 1899 in Schuls (Switzerland)) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest and cell biologist .

After studying natural sciences and writing a dissertation in this area, Carnoy went to Bonn, Leipzig, Berlin and Vienna. In Bonn he worked with Johannes von Hanstein . He was then sent to Rome to represent the Diocese of Tournai. There he worked with Francesco Castracane degli Antelminelli (1817–1899) in the natural sciences. After his recall to Belgium in 1868 he was supposed to establish a course in general biology at the University of Leuven . However, financial difficulties at the university initially prevented Carnoy from putting this plan into action. Instead he became vicar in Celles near Tournai. In 1876 Carnoy was again appointed to the University of Leuven, where he initially taught practical microscopy and in 1879 published his "Manuel de microscopie". Carnoy later founded a school for cell biology at the University of Leuven, the first of its kind in the world. Since 1884 he published the magazine "La Cellule".

Carnoy dealt, among other things, with the true nature of membranes made of what were then called "albuminoid substances" ( proteins ). Carnoy's fixing mixture, which is still frequently used today , was developed by him. It consists of ethanol , chloroform and acetic acid in a volume ratio of 6: 3: 1.

Carnoy's students include the Belgian anatomist, neurologist and neuropathologist Arthur van Gehuchten (1861–1914), who was influenced by him mainly in the field of cell biology .
