Jean-Charles Berthonnet

Jean-Charles Berthonnet (born February 27, 1957 ) is a diplomat (Ministre plénipotentiaire de 1ère classe) from France . From 2016 to 2019 he was his home country's ambassador to Indonesia and East Timor .

From February to July 1984 Berthonnet worked in the central administration in the area of ​​economics and finance, then he was third until 1985, second until 1986 and first secretary until 1988 in Budapest . He returned to France to the central administration and worked again in the economics and finance department until 1992. In 1991, Berthonnet was a member of the European Armistice Monitoring Mission in Yugoslavia . From 1992 to 1994 he was second advisor in Vilnius and from 1994 to 1995 again at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. From 1995 to 1998 Berthonnet returned to the central administration, this time in the “Continental Europe” division as deputy director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic States. He came back to Budapest until 2001, this time as a second consultant, before becoming Deputy Director for Uses and Local Personnel in the central administration from 2001 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007, Berthonnet was the first consultant in Moscow and until 2009 in the central administration responsible for the Paris property consolidation project with the general director for administration and modernization. From 2009 to 2013 Berthonnet worked as Ambassador to Astana (since 2019 Nur-Sultan) ( Kazakhstan ) and from September 2013 to 2016 as Deputy Inspector General for Foreign Affairs. In October 2016 he succeeded Corinne Breuzé as ambassador in Jakarta with accreditation for Indonesia and East Timor. He handed over his accreditation for East Timor on October 10, 2017. Berthonnet's tenure in Jakarta ended in 2019. Olivier Chambard succeeded him in 2020 .

Berthonnet holds a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and a PhD in Science and Technology on the rationalization of economic policy decisions. In addition to French, he also speaks English, Russian and Hungarian.
