Jean-Claude Maire Vigueur (born February 18, 1943 in Morteau ) is a French historian .

After completing his training at the École normal supérieure de Paris , he worked at the CNRS and the École française de Rome in the 1970s and 1980s . From 1990 to 2006 he was professor of medieval history at the Università degli Studi di Firenze , and in 2006 he accepted an appointment at the Università degli studi di Roma Tre .

Vigueur researches mainly on the medieval municipalities of Upper and Central Italy , their self-government, political and social organization. Another focus of his work is the history of the city of Rome in the Middle Ages, here in particular the commune and thematically related individuals such as the Roman tribune Cola di Rienzo . In 2000, Vigueur published a prosopographical account of the Podestà , who had ruled the Italian communes since the late 12th century. In 2003 he published a monograph on the urban milites , a central group in communal society in northern and central Italy during the 12th and 13th centuries. His French-language monograph on the history of Rome from the 12th to 14th centuries, published in 2010, was translated into Italian in 2011. The presentation, which is divided into eight chapters, focuses less on the political and religious aspects of the urban history of Rome, which are often treated in research, but rather places social and economic aspects in the foreground.
