Jean-Denis Bredin (born May 17, 1929 in Paris , † September 1, 2021 ) was a French lawyer , writer and university professor .

Career

Bredin studied law and was able to successfully complete this course in 1957 with a doctorate . Already during his studies he tried his hand at literary texts, which over the years became an ever larger and more important focus alongside his legal work.

In 1951 Bredin was accepted into the Conference du stage and also worked for some time as its executive secretary. In 1967 he accepted a position at the University of Lille . As a partisan of Edgar Faure , he supported Edgar Faure from May 68 in his reform efforts. In 1969 Bredin moved to the Sorbonne in Paris and stayed there until his retirement in 1993. As such, between 1982 and 1986 he was the executive director of the Bibliothèque nationale de France .

As the successor to the writer Marguerite Yourcenar , he was accepted into the Académie française on June 15, 1989 ( Fauteuil 3 ).
